Hi, my name is Tony, and I remember the first Halloween I spent in the United Sates. I was in the sixth grade, trying my best to study as hard as I could to learn English well. Even though I studied English in my

hometown, Hong Kong, I was still not able to communicate in English. I realized that my classmates were talking about how they would dress on Halloween, but I didn?t know what Halloween was.

That year Halloween came on Saturday. I was home most of the day studying. I didn?t have a chance to go outside and see how everyone was dressed.

After dinner, my parents turned off all the lights and went to their room. They did this so they could ignore(不理会) the children coming to the house for treats. But they didn?t tell me about it. I was in my room, so I didn?t know what was happening. After a while I went out of my room to get a drink of water. I realized that the house was dark very early, and I thought that my parents were tired after a long day of work. I didn?t have any brothers or sisters to come with me, so I felt lonely in the dark house. I was not used to that. Then it happened. When I was drinking my glass of water, the doorbell rang. I looked out of my window. There were four or five ghosts and witches standing at my front door!

I was so scared that I started screaming and I covered myself with my blanket. I tried not to scream, but I couldn?t stop. My father came running into my room asking me what was the matter. I told him about the ghosts and the witches, and he explained to me about Halloween. I felt a little better after .

Tiger Mom,

You?ve been criticized(批评) a lot since you published your memoir(回忆录), Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. One problem is that some people don?t get your humor. They think you?re serious about all things, and they think Lulu and I are oppressed(压制) by our ill mother. That is not true.

But for real, it?s not their fault. No outsider can know what our family is really like. They don?t hear us laughing over each other?s jokes. They don?t see us eating our hamburgers with fried rice. They don?t know how much fun we have when the six of us — dogs included — squeeze into one bed and argue

about what movies to download from Netflix.

I admit: Having you as a mother was no tea party. There were some play dates I wish I?d gone to and some piano camps I wish I?d skipped. But now that I?m 18 and about to leave the tiger den(穴), I?m glad you and Daddy raised me the way you did.

A lot of people have accused you of producing robot kids who can?t think for themselves. Well, that?s funny. I think your strict parenting forced me to be more independent. Early on, I decided to be an easy child to raise. Maybe I got it from Daddy — he taught me not to care what people think and to make my own choices — but I also decided to be who I want to be.

Everybody?s talking about the birthday cards we once made for you, which you rejected because they weren?t good enough. Funny how some people are convinced that Lulu and I are scarred for life. But let?s face it: It took me 30 second; I didn?t even sharpen the pencil. That?s why, when you refused, I didn?t feel hurt at all.

There?s one more thing: I have come to understand what it really means to live a meaningful life to the fullest. To me, it?s about knowing that you?the piano piece you?ve practiced for days and hours finally comes to life beneath your fingertips. You feel you.

Yours, Sophia

( )36. In the author?s opinion, why do some people criticize her mother? A. They don?t know the truth.

B. They have a different culture.

C. They aren?t strict with their children.D. They don?t have a good sense of humor. ( )37. According to the letter Sophia really felt sorry for not having ______.

What's going to happen in the future? Will robots control our planet? Will computers become smarter than us? Not likely. But here are some things that scientists say are most likely to happen in 10 to 30 years from now, according to the BBC. Digital money

We used to pay with cash (现金) for everything we bought. Now when we use a credit card (信用卡) to shop online, money is spent without us seeing it. That means we are already using digital money. Using a card is much easier than searching our pockets for change. It is also safer than carrying a lot of cash. When ATM cards were first introduced, they were not accepted everywhere. But now it's hard to live without them. It's reported that people in Sweden completely stopped using cash last year, and the US might be next. Bionic (仿生的) eye

It's no longer something only in a science fiction movie. People who are blind may have a chance to

get their sight back -- by wearing bionic eyes.

A blind eye can no longer sense light, but a bionic eye can use a camera to "see" the environment and send data (数据) to the mind. Now the bionic eye only allows patients to see lights and unclear shapes. A high resolution (高清的) image could be just a few years away. Self-driving cars

Unlike a human driver, a self-driving car won't get distracted (分神) by a phone call, the radio or something outside the window. Sensors (探测器) and cameras on the car would allow it to stick strictly to the rules of the road and keep a safe distance from other cars. This would greatly reduce the number of road accidents. Many vehicle companies are now planning self-driving cars. By 2040, driverless vehicles will be widely accepted and possibly be the dominant vehicles on the road.

Saving water is an important part of going As water becomes less and polluted more, conservation (保护) becomes more and more important. The less water you use, the less wastewater will end up in our rivers and lakes. Wasting water means that more water needs to be treated and cleaned, a process that requires quite a lot of energy.

As it is said above, cutting down on water usage is one of the most important things you can do for your local environment and the planet as a whole. That is why more green households are going blue: cutting down their water footprint by conserving and harvesting (收获) water.

It may seem like a big concept, but going blue starts with small changes that everyone can make. Something as simple as turning off the tap while you brush your teeth can save a lot of water. Wash your

fruits and vegetables in a bowl rather than under a tap to save even more. Make sure that the taps are fully turned off every time you step away from the sink or the shower — all those little drips can add up to a lot of water waste.

Another way of reducing your water footprint is reducing your dependence on the main water supply. Rainwater harvesting can meet a lot of your home?s water needs. Many of us already practice rainwater harvesting in a small way. Collecting water from your gutters (檐沟) is a great way to keep your garden green without running the sprinkler (洒水器).

( )33. The underlined word “green” means ______ in this passage. A. 未成熟的 B. 环保 C.嫉妒 D. 健康的 ( )34. According to the passage, which is NOT the reason that people should save water? A. Treating wastewater needs much energy.

B. The water on the earth is becoming less and less. C. The water on the earth is becoming polluted more.

D. Rainwater harvesting can meet a lot of your home?s water needs.

( )35. According to the passage, all of these can be used to save water except ______. A. washing fruit and vegetables under a tap B. using a bowl to wash your fruit and vegetables C. making sure taps are fully turned off all the time D. turning off the tap every time after brushing your teeth ( )36. Which of the following is the best title of this passage? A. Save Water by Turning off the Tap

B. How to Treat and Clean Wastewater

C. Keep Your Garden Green with Rainwater D. Save Water Starting with Small Changes ( )37. From the passage, we can know that_____. A. we can get enough water by harvesting B. most people pay no attention to saving water C. we can practice rainwater harvesting in a small way D. harvesting water is more necessary than conserving it

Are people less happy or happier when they get older? If your answer is “happier”, then you are right, based on a study published five years ago. It found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age fifty. In fact, it found that by the age of eighty-five, people are happier with their life than they were at eighteen.

The findings came from a Gallup survey of more than three hundred and forty thousand adults in the United States in 2008. At that time, the people were between the ages of eighteen and eighty-five.

Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were the highest among adults between the ages of twenty-two and twenty-five. Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties. Levels of happiness were the highest among the kids and those in their early seventies.

The survey also found that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did.

So why would happiness increase with age? One theory is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.
