A Real Successor
The Old Man and The Sea is a novel written by Hemingway in 1951 which is one of the most famous works of Hemingway. The story happened around an elderly Cuban fisherman. He fought with a huge marlin in the Gulf Stream far away from the bank. The old man and The Sea helped Hemingway have the outstanding position in the literature world, and it also played an important role in his getting The Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.
Actually, this novel was based on real characters and incidents. After the World War I, Hemingway moved to Cuba and knew an aged fisherman, Gregorio Fuentes. In 1930, the boat that Hemingway was on sunk in the sea, but fortunately, Fuentes saved him. Afterwards, they became close friends and often went fishing together.
In 1936, Fuentes went far out of the sea and caught a big fish, but the fish was so big that it took him too much time to pull it to the coast. In result, it was attacked by a shark and it turned into a skeleton when he came back in the end. Hemingway was shocked by the case so one day he started to write a novel whose content was similar to the case. Now, we all know the novel is names The Old Man and The Sea.
From the plain description with rich life colors, we can come into the old fisherman Santiago’s life in his late years. Santiago lived a poor and lonely life but he held a unbending and un willing attitude to life and fate.
Though he had become very old and weak, he was always confident and zealous in his daily life. He usually went out to sea, and with failure time after time, he came across with an amazingly big fish. It was a dream to him for a great number of years. During three days and nights, he struggled with the fish desperately. At the moment that he was completely exhausted, he eventually caught the fish. When he was fighting with the fish, one feeling appeared again and again in his mind that man was not born to be defeated. However, finally, he failed. What happened? On the way back, hungered sharks followed one after another. He tried his best to kill these greedy creatures. It was to the best of his ability so when he returned back to the coast, he was tired to the extreme with a huge fish stone and a broken boat. It was true that he failed but this pride was standing firmly in the heart. He was defeated but he was a really brave hero. The scar on his body was seeing his heroic experience. In the small shack, the old man fell to sleep without disappoint.
The story seems to explain the relation between people and nature. In the fact, it praises people’s indestructible spirit. In the real world, he failed but in the spirit he was a winner. His tough spirit revealed human’s nobleness and dignity. All around the world, who has never failed even though you often succeeded? There may be various excuses for your failure, but whatever the reason is, failure usually gives you a attack that you cannot endure. Above all, will you choose to do the same thing when
you have failed? If you insist, you will see dawn of success. To the old man, success did not mean the big marlin and he did not care when he only got an empty fish stone at the final, simply because his value of life was fully embodied in the process of pursuing the marlin fish. The old man was a real successor since he had ever struggled for his dream. Everybody has their dream or goal in the life. I think if you have tried your best, you will not regret in the future.

The old man and the sea
In the past a few days, we learned something about a novel called the old man and the sea, after learning it, I have some thoughts about it.
The story introduced an old experienced fisherman to us. His name is Santiago. He has not caught any fish for 84 days, so the 85th day, he went to the deep sea, trying to get some fish. It was a hard time when Santiago floated on the sea for almost 3 days in order to catch a big fish called marlin. Finally, he made it. But unfortunately, the smell of blood attracted a lot of sharks. At last, all his effort to drive away the sharks was in vain. His marlin was eaten up, and he still got nothing.
Although the consequence was not so good, I still believe that Santiago is a real hero. A hero, not means that he is never afraid of anything, but means that he is really afraid, but he never gives up. This is hero. In addition, his words in this story also impressed me a lot. He said,“man is not made for defeat, a man can be destroyed, but not defeatded.’’ Perhaps we wish that everything can go well in our daily lives, but as we know, it is only a wish. We are sure to meet some trouble in our whole lives, so we must be brave. We can never give up. No matter how old we are, no matter how unlucky we are,
no matter how hard the problems are, we are expected to solve those problems bravely, and never say:“no”.
Of course, now we are college students, we may have not met any problems that were really difficult to solve. But if we enter the society after a few years, we have to face some trouble which will make you lose your head. Then will you give up? Santiago taught us never give up, man is not made for defeat. Be steel in your future lives, and I really hope that we can lead happy lives in the future.
