Last month, I went to New York for a meeting. After the meeting, I visited my cousin and stayed

at his home for some days. We hadn't seen each other for years. When we finally saw each other, I found he had changed a lot.

He was no longer the quiet man he used to be. Instead, he kept complaining (抱怨). He complained about his work, his neighbors, his children and so on. At first, I showed pity on him. But after staying at his home for some days, I realized that he himself was the real problem. I decided to tell him a story. And here is the story.

Once upon a time, a man living in a village was not satisfied with his life. He kept complaining about the villagers. One day, he went to the market with a younger man whom he newly met. After they walked for a while, the man started complaining. "I really don't like my neighbors. They are mean and greedy(贫婪的). They don't care about others at all. They are always saying something bad about others behind their backs," he complained. "Really?" asked the younger man. "Yes," said the man. Pointing to two men who were walking towards them, he continued, "Just look at the men walking towards us. From them you can see how terrible people here are." The younger man laughed and said, "But those are us. We're walking towards a mirror." My cousin became quiet after I finished the story. I hoped he had realized that when we are complaining about something, we ourselves may be the real problem. 26. Which of the following about the writer is TRUE? A. He is a New Yorker. B. Dear Mr Brown,

I have struggled to make friends since entering high school. When I am around new people, I just want to disappear because I'm too shy to say anything.

On weekends, when others are spending time together, I often have to stay at home alone. I'm tired of doing nothing on weekends. I pretend that I have friends and have done things with them on weekends, but I don't really do anything. I do that because I don't want to sound like a loser when others ask what I got up to do.

I do want to make friends. But I don't know how. Please help!

Yours, Betty

Dear Betty,

When I was a high school student, I was also shy. Sometimes I felt embarrassed in social situations, especially among people I didn't know well. So I know how you feel. Luckily, I'm no longer as shy as I was before.

First of all, you should learn how to overcome your shyness. I believe you can do it. Is there anyone in your class that you might want to go out with on weekends or aaer school? If there is, don't be afraid to talk with him or her. Give yourself a chance. He or she may want to make mends with you, too.

Do you have any interests or hobbies? If you do, join a school club. There you'Il meet many people who share the same interests and hobbie's with you. It is much easier to make friends with someone sharing your interests and hobbies.

Lastly, I'd like to tell you not to feel sad about being shy. Many other people feel the same way as you do. You're not alone.

My best,

C. Interested.D. Shy.

32. Betty is alone on weekends because ______. A. she wants to study at home B. she enjoys being by herself C. she is tired of going out D. she has no friends to go out with 33. 34. In Paragraph 2 of his letter, Tom Brown encourages Betty to _______. A. pretend to have a lot of friends B. join a school club to make friends C. find out what she is interested in doingD. talk with someone she wants to go out with

35. What does Tom Brown mean by saying "You're not alone" in his letter? A. He is there for Betty. B. Betty doesn't live alone.

Mot her s is a moving poem which tells us mother love is the most selfless love in the world.

I still clearly remember what happened one day when I was in junior high school. After school I went home only to find the lunch was not ready. I felt angry and rushed out. About one hour later, I entered the classroom finding a lunch box on my desk. My deskmate told me my mother had brought it there. Opening it, I found my favorite food inside. I couldn’t hold back my tears and felt sorry for my behavior.

Although our mothers may never say “I love you” to us, they give us their love through action without asking for any reward.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Welcome to our wildlife park. Wild animals are our friends, without whom we can’t live on the earth alone. Therefore, to protect our friends and guarantee your safety, please do as follows. Firstly, never get close to the animals, especially dangerous ones like tigers, lions, and elephants. Not only are you forbidden to throw anything at the animals or feed them, but also you aren’t allowed to take photos with them in case you will be attacked. Meanwhile, you’d better not play games with animals trained by non-professionals. Finally, no littering signs can be seen around the park, so please respect them.

I wish you have a good time here.
